Motown. But this is the bombastic combination of Motown soul and funk with the psychedelic feel of the late 60’s and 70’s. “What” you ask?!  Picture Jefferson Airplane getting together with the Chili Peppers and you’ve got Jackie Blue in a nutshell.

Jackie Blue’s Behind Me album was written musically so that each song stands on it’s own–A song for every day or mood. Lyrically, each of our songs reflects personal and political themes–From the story of a classic “lady of the night” in Detroit Queen, to a celebration of our singer’s young son in G (written for Gabriel), to the need to use the power of the media to help the poor and downtrodden in Channel 5.  We even wrote the I.B. Waltz, Virginia as a tongue-in-cheek country song for some of our southern friends (you know who you are).

The actual recording was done in our home studio using computer-based digital recording and editing equipment. The band did everything from writing, playing and singing, to engineering, mixing, mastering, and producing our CD. Start to finish, Behind Me is a CD by Jackie Blue. The performances capture a snapshot of our time together in late 2000 and early 2001.

Funk ‘N Roll Music: Picture the misguided notion of Janis Joplin as lead singer of Led Zeppelin and you’ll have the essence of Jackie Blue.

Complexification. That word looks different spelled out. It’s the awesome feeling you get when you have an epiphany at 2am right before you finally kick his butt out of the house for the last time.

Or when you’re driving down the road at 100mph and you figure your life out by removing the complexity from it.

Usually there isn’t anyone around to celebrate the moment with. For Jackie Blue, there’s always a song involved to keep us company. Janis Joplin singing Piece of My Heart or Led Zeppelin playing In the Evening.  Songs that are timeless.

Can you imagine what it would sound like, if you combined that great feeling with Joplin’s raw emotional energy, Jimmy Page’s rocking guitar playing, and the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s funk?

On Friday, 2006 January 20, Princess, host of 89.1 WIDR FM’s afternoon radio show in Kalamazoo, Michigan selected City Nights to play live. The song was originally recorded on Jackie Blue’s Complexification: Part II album. As the song played, Princess and Tom, Jackie Blue’s bass player, talked about the song and Jackie Blue’s upcoming shows in New York City, Morristown, New Jersey, and Toms River, New Jersey live over the radio and simultaneously on Myspace.com. During their conversation, the band offered to dedicate a live recording of City Nights to her. This is the live single of that recording.
